Broadly divided into following four families :-

1.  Indo European family (Arya)

2.  Dravidian family (Dravida)

3.  Austric famliy (Nishada)

4.  Sino Tibetan family ( kirata   )

■ About 73% of the Indian population speaks different languages of the Aryan family.

■ Dravidian family is spoken by 20% of Indian population. 

■ Austric and Sino Tibetan is spoken by small number of people. 

The Aryan Language ▶

      a . The Dardie  Aryan language.

       b.  The Indo Aryan language. 

The Dardie Aryan language - 

  1- Shina including kashmiri, shina proper and kohistani.

  2- khowar /Chatrani /Chitrali.

  3- Kafiristan/ Nuristani.

The Indo-Aryan language -

   1- Northern Aryan language.

   2- North Western Aryan language. 

   3- Southern Aryan language. 

   4- Eastern Aryan language. 

   5- East - central Aryan language. 

   6- Central Aryan language. 

 ■ Among the Aryan language , Hindi is the most important language spoken by a large percentage of people of the country. 

In every Indian state , Hindi speaking people are commonly found. Even the illiterate people can speak and understand Hindi.

Dravidian language ▶ Dravidian language are older than Aryan languages.  Dravidian entered India much before Aryans . Dravidian language fall under two major groups as under :-

a. The North Dravidian language. 

 b. The South Dravidian language. 

Austric language ▶ The Austric language of India belong to the Austro Asiatic sub family. This category is further subdivided into :-

  a. Munda or kol language. 

  b. Mon- khmer language. 

Sino- Tibetan language ▶ Depending upon the region of settlement , these languages are put into several groups. Sino-tibetan language have three major sub-divisions :-

  a. The Tibeto Himalayan.

  b . The North Assamese .

  c. The Assam - Myanomari ( Burmese).
