The Great Sparrow Count is a Nature Forever Society of India (NFSI) Initiative. NFSI is a non- profit organization found to conserve house sparrows. The main aim of this organization is to analyze and document the population and distribution of 24 different species of sparrows found across the world.

Why are the sparrow count reducing? Environment degradation has caused direct loss of food and nesting places continuously. In absence of food and shelter these birds stifle to exist.

Homeless due to congested dwellings that makes it difficult for the bird to build nests.

Increased use of pre-cooked, semi-cooked, packaged food.

Insects which are their primary source of food are killed due to use of pesticides and insecticides in farms and gardens. Radiations from mobile tower distributed over wide areas at close intervals.

Concluding Remark: A sparrow conservation programme is being launched at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), Borivali, and forest department's Rambagh Colony in Chandrapur. Apart from initiatives at government level simpler societal changes need to be inherited.

For example bio-degradable waste from kitchen can be utilized to make birds feed by the action of microbes through decomposition. In summer, bird -bath along with water bowls would save them from dehydration providing them respite from heat. Small plants and hedges can be grown to help build those nests. Artificial nests outside our homes could be built for a safe breeding and roosting place. For instance Seminary hills in Nagpur is too designated as a sparrow conservation site.
