Fovea An Integral Depression In Human Eye

Indian scientists has found that a small depression in the retina of eye called “Fovea” plays a crucial role in helping humans read the text , recognize faces, enjoy colors, focus on computer screens, etc.

What is fovea? Fovea: In the eye, a tiny pit located in the macula of the retina that provides the clearest vision of all. Only in the fovea are the layers of the retina spread aside to let light fall directly on the cones, the cells that give the sharpest image. Also called the central fovea or fovea centralis.

The word "fovea" is the Latin word for "small pit." The fovea is literally a small depression (in the retina). The fovea is a specialized region that dominates our visual perception which provides more than half of the input from the eyes to the visual cortex of the brain. It is located near the optic nerve and is best suited for fine task like reading.

However Fovea is unable to process rapidly changing visual signals because of slow response of its cone-photoreceptors than cone photoreceptors present in the peripheral retina. This inability let the humans see continuous motion in movies/flipbooks. (Cone- photoreceptors are the neurons that are frontline of the visual system).

Understanding the functioning of Fovea helps in correcting central vision loss like macular degeneration and design visual prosthetics (Bionic eye).

What is a Bionic Eye? It is a retinal implant which interprets images captured by a miniature video camera worn on a pair of glasses. It mimics the function of the retina to restore sight for those with severe vision loss.

Concluding Remark: Among the mammals, only humans and other primates have Fovea. Some predatory birds like Owls and few reptiles also have similar structures. Perhaps a few years from now students of biology will regard this entire story of the receptors as a marvelous set of discovery in terms and to appreciate fully its impact, it helps to have spent the years wondering how the receptors could possibly work.

The problem with using so many species is that the details of the organization of the retinas can differ markedly from one species to the next. Moreover, knowledge of the primate retina, one of the most difficult to record from, has until recently had to depend largely on inferences from the results pooled from these other species. But progress in primates is accelerating as the technical difficulties have been clarified.

In the past few years, understanding of the way in which a rod or cone responds to light has dramatically increased, so much so that one has the feeling of at last beginning to understand how they work.
