It was the first national institute recognized by the government of India for post-graduate studies and management research. It was established in 1961 in the month of November. Prominent members like Jagdish Sheth, J. K. Sengupta and Paul Samuelson have played important roles at this reputed B-school which is situated in eastern India. 

IIM Kolkata has evolved from the time it was founded and has gained recognition worldwide and attracts the finest students of India. It offers the following academic programs:

PGDCM – Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Aided Management

PGDBM – Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management

PGDM – Post Graduate Program in Management

PGPEX – Post Graduate Program for Executives

FPM – Fellow Program in Management

PGDCM is a 2 year full-time course to help students become conversant with management education. It enables them to keep in pace with the changes taking place in the world. The program lays extra emphasis on IT – Information and Technology sector and business application.

PGDBM is a 3 year part-time course that offers working executives the opportunity to acquire knowledge of different management facets.

PGDM on the other hand exposes students to conditions that require structuring unstructured problems, thereby teaching them to resolve complex situations.

Through PGPEX IIM Kolkata provides working professionals the opportunity to enhance their skills and climb up the top managerial ranks in organizations. Apart from the normal classrooms lectures, this one year course is carried out through unique methods like individual assignments, case studies and group assignments. The institutes make arrangements for an international tour for studies or for a 1 month project too. The course helps professionals compete with the ever changing requirements of the corporate world.

FPM is a full-time advanced research and study program offered to students at the doctoral rank in management and areas similarly related. 

IIM Kolkata involves its students in activities such as seminars, management development courses, workshops, consultancy and research and in international conferences and much more.

IIM Kolkata’s placement bureau organizes on-campus interviews every two years for all their students. The institute witnessed the record for highest placements in the year 2009.
