The foundation for India’s 11th IIM was laid down on January 4th 2011 at Tiruchirapalli in the state of Tamil Nadu by Mr. Kapil Sibal, hon’ble minister for Telecommunication and HRD.  It is one among the seven IIM’s established by the government under the eleventh 5 year plan. The institute offers a full-time 2 year Post-Graduate Program in Management (PGPM). Aspiring candidates need to pass the CAT exam with excellent PI/GD and competitive scores. It also offers a 5 year full-time Ph.D. degree course in Fellow Program in Management (Marketing), (Finance and accounting), (economics) and (quantitative techniques).  The institutions faculty has done extremely well in many different fields. The aim of the institute is to make young minds proficient professional managers, adept to work in all sectors and excel in their performance as they work for the society’s welfare.

Until the completion of the permanent campus, the institute will temporally function from NIT campus, Tiruchirapalli. The National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus provides accommodation for faculty, classes as well as hostel. The institute’s permanent campus is taking shape on a 200 acres land that lies on the Trichy-Pudukottai highway, 12 km away from the Tiruchirapalli International Airport.

IIM Tiruchirapalli offers the following amenities:

  • Library
  • Physical Education
  • Swimming Pool
  • Computer Center
  • Hospital
  • Gust House
  • Hostel and Mess
  • Security
  • Transportation
  • Lecture Hall
  • Shopping Center
  • Campus Communication Services
  • Estate Maintenance

All 92 students from the 2013-14 batch got summer internships. After IIM Rohtak, IIM Tiruchirappalli is the only institute to have all its students placed for summer internship. Unlike last year, this year saw a fall in the stipends offered for summer internship. Factors like economic slowdown are to be blamed for the fall in stipends.

This year 40 companies approached the institute during summer placement as compared to last year’s figure of 83. Economic downturn and a tricky job market could not stop students of IIM Tiruchirappalli from being placed successfully this year. The placements for the 1st batch was conducted in January this year, the placements for the 2nd batch on the other hand got concluded recently on 10th March 2013.

As compared to last year’s 36%, this year 43% chose for marketing and 20% chose finance.  Unlike last year were the percentage of students who opted for the ITES/IT sector was zero, this year 10% of students decided join the ITES/IT sector.
