Career options in India is mainly streamlined towards medicine and engineering. After seeing the Result of NEET candidates are selected based on merit. Likewise, for engineering JEE Main Entrance Examination is the first step towards engineering, there are various other engineering entrance examination in India for admission into engineering colleges. After registering for the exam, you will get JEE Main Admit Card to appear for the exam. There are various branches in Engineering and one of the exclusive branch is Petroleum Engineering. Petroleum Engineering is the branch of engineering which deals with analysis, design, & development of methodologies for the extraction of hydrocarbons i.e.; Crude oil & Natural Gas from natural reservoirs below earth surface. A professional doing the above-mentioned task is known as a Petroleum Engineer or Gas Engineer.

  • Upstream Sector: Field of study which deals with excavation production and exploitation of Petroleum Oils and gases.
  •  Downstream Sector:concentrates on refining and marketing distribution.

Most of the Institutes in India concentrate on Upstream sector for the syllabus of Petroleum Engineering.

Entry-level petroleum engineering jobs require a bachelor's degree in either of the following branches:

  • Petroleum Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering

The work environment for petroleum engineers is generally in indoor offices or research labs, but there can be requirements to visit drilling sites more often and for longer period of time. Time taken for travelling is usually considered as overtime.

Sources mention that 2 out of 5 petroleum engineers work for an average of 40 hours per week (2014) and usually at drilling site they work in cycles of 84 hours on duty and 84 hours off duty.

Skills Required:

a.People Skills: A petroleum engineer may have to interact with employees from different countries or backgrounds Only a person with good communication and Interpersonal Skills can coordinate a team of employees to lead a successful project.

b.Advanced Mathematics Skills: Being a Petroleum Engineer is not a small task. It requires sharp minds and mathematical abilities such as calculus to analyze, design and troubleshooting in their work.

c.Analytical Skills: Assessing complex plans and anticipating possible flaws in the work requires keen observation and analytical skills

d.Creative approach: The one with creativity to solve the upcoming challenges in the work environment can only survive as a petroleum engineer.

  • Reservoirs i.e. found deep below as rock formations are studied along with geoscientist to understand the geological formation of hydrocarbons.
  • Upon understanding the formation, a suitable drilling method is chosen.
  • Desired equipment’s are founded.
  • Implementation of the well-designed plan and constant monitoring to ensure continuous work flow.

  • Equipment designing for extraction of oil and gas in the most economically feasible manner.
  • To squeeze out maximum oil out of a reservoir requires innovative methods developed for injecting water, chemicals, gases or steams directly into the reservoirs. This is performed by petroleum engineers.
  • Laying out plans for extraction of oil and gas from the fields.
  • Surveying, Analyzing and controlling the production rate and efficiency of extraction from wells.
  • Linking multiple large areas of gas and oil deposits to a single well by the use of advanced computer- controlled drilling and fracturing.
  • Maintenance and Quality check for the installed machineries to ensure the equipment are installed, operated and maintained properly.

1. Completion Engineer:Decide the best way to finish building a well and ensure the upward flow of oil and gas from well.

2. Drilling Engineer: Determine the best way to drill, considering the factors such as cost, safety, efficient and minimal disruptiveness to the nature.

3. Production Engineer: Takes over wells after drilling process, also monitor oil and gas extraction rate and executes plans to extract the most out of it.

4. Reservoir Engineer: Estimating quantity of oil and gas that can be recovered from reservoirs.

5. Safety Engineer: An HSSE officer holds the responsibility of ensuring safety of employees in accordance with government regulations and security standards.

6. Well Log Analyst: Role of measuring during different phases of drilling.

7. Energy Economist: Revenue potential for all investments and laying out strategical plans to meet financial goals and expansions are dealt by EE.
