Biodegradable polymers are known as biopolymers. It can be produced from natural or synthetic material. The major biopolymers are as Starch, Sugar, Cellulose and Synthetic materials. A biopolymer can be developed by the process of chemical polymerization. Natural occurring biopolymer can be chemically modified to achieve desired properties depending upon its end use and application.

Every Biopolymer has its own material specific properties. Bio-plastic are used for pesticide soil pins, for packaging in-flight catering products and packaging of dairy products. Starch is natural product, which is basically obtained from potatoes, maize, wheat, etc. It has excellent oxygen barrier properties. Another useful biopolymer is Polylactides, which made from lactic acid and had excellent water resistant properties. It gets decomposed harmlessly in human body, which makes it suitable for surgical implants.

Next, Cellulose is biopolymer which is transparent and has got good folding properties. Moreover, Synthetic compounds obtained from petroleum can also serve as raw material for the synthesis of biopolymer.
