According to wildlife survey organisation,22 species have gone extinct in India in last few centuries. India is the home for 11.5% of all flora and 6.49% of all fauna in the world.
As per the Botanical survey of India (BSI), we lost 18 flora and 4 fauna species.
18 species of flora having 14 flowering and 4 non-flowering and some of them are the followings
  • Lastreopsis wattii , a fern in Manipur discovered by George watt in 1882.
  • 3 from genus Ophiorrhiza, all from peninsular India.
    • Ophiorrhiza brunonis
    • Ophiorrhiza caudate
    • Ophiorrhiza radican
  • Corypha taliera Roxb, a palm species from Bengal and Myanmar. It was discovered by William Roxburgh.
Some extinct fauna
  • Cheetah(Acionyx jubatus)
  • The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensisi)
Species, those may extinct in near future.
  • Pink-headed duck(Rhodonessa caryophyllaceai)
  • Himalayan quail (Ophrysia supercililios)
Reasons responsible for this trend
  • Competition
  • Predation
  • Natural selection
  • Human induced factors like hunting, habitat degradation etc.
Concluding Remark: Ecological balance is very important to live a safe life. Continuation of this trend will result in extreme global events which will effect the whole globe without the boundaries of countries. There is a need to join hand with other countries to address this giant problem.
