In India almost 50% population is dependent on agriculture for their survival in one or another ways. In any sector of economy, income is essential factor of motivation to produce more and it's same of agriculture also. Importance of agriculture make it one of the top priority of the government. Just after independence, policy makers focused on food security aspect and make policies to increase production. These policies give us positive results and now India is food sufficient country and having capacities to export also. It was considered by policy makers that increased production automatically will result in increased income for the farmers but it was not true for all farming households. It was highlighted in NSSO's consumption expenditure survey of 2011-12 that one-fifth of all rural agricultural households having agriculture their principle occupation were having income below than poverty line. So now this focus of increasing production has shifted towards increasing the income of farmers.

According to NITI Aayog report, doubling the farm income should not be viewed as same as doubling the farm output. If inflation in farm product price is high than we can achieve this target in short period of time but government is targeted to double the income of farmers in real terms and try to focus on the fundamental problems of the sector. Policy makers provided seven point strategy to double farmers income by 2022.

  1. Farmers should focus on improved irrigation methods to increase the productivity of each drop of water. The concept of " One drop more crop" emerges from here only.
  2. Easy availability of quality seeds and nutrients on the basis of soil health.
  3. Provision of risk mitigation using various crop insurance schemes.
  4. Improved system of warehouse storage and cold storage in order to reduce after farm loses.
  5. Provision of value addition in farm products using food processing.
  6. States should facilitate various farm markets and e-commerce markets for sell of farm produce at competitive rates.
  7. Encourage farmers to engage in other activities like fishing, beekeeping, poultry etc so i can get some additional income from here.

These all strategies are trying to address most fundamental problems of sector and has potential to achieve good results. Government should encourage research in irrigation methods, seeds, nutrients etc. This increased income of 50% population will improve the overall well being of whole economy.
