With the Indian Premier League knocking at the door, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has turned down a request by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reschedule an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Kolkata.

The city of Kolkata is playing host to the Annual General Meeting of ICC in the latter half of April, coinciding with the IPL 2018. As the meeting is scheduled for April 22-26, the world governing body of cricket wanted its delegates to attend an IPL match at the Eden Gardens. However, the BCCI decided to play hardball with the issue, rejecting the proposal as deferring various matches in a planned fixture might prove to be calamitous.

“Yes, there was a special request from ICC as they wanted its various member delegates to watch an IPL game. However, between April 22 and 26, there are no home games of KKR at the Eden Gardens,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The home team, Kolkata Knight Riders play a match at the Eden Gardens on April 16 and the next fixture at the ground being on May 3, there is no IPL game to be played there in the span of five days. Between April 22 and 26, IPL games are played at Hyderabad, Mumbai, Indore, Bangalore, and Jaipur.

“If we have to reschedule it, the entire itinerary would be in a disarray. So we told them that it’s not possible to have an IPL game match rescheduled,” the official added.

On the other hand, that is not the only complication arising from the AGM of the ICC, as the hopes of the attendance of Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi is hanging by a thread as his visa might be denied because of the strained relations and political conflicts between India and Pakistan.

“If Sethi doesn’t get a visa, it might well be an indicator of the chances of Pakistan team procuring visa during the Asia Cup in September,” the official’s take on the subject.

The meeting is being held at Kolkata instead of Mumbai to avoid any kind of remonstrations against the attendance of a PCB delegate in India. The AGM is playing host to representatives of all the Test-playing nations.

It remains doubtful as to whether Sethi’s visa would be approved in light of the numerous recent cases of disturbances across the India-Pakistan border, and could prove to be a delicate matter at hand.
