New Delhi, Mar,14: Raising a big question over the fate of the Rail Budget, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to remove Dinesh Trivedi as the Railway Minister.
Mamta has also suggested the name of Mukul Roy to replace Dinesh Trivedi for the Cabinet rank. However, Mukul Roy told the news channel CNN-IBN that he has got no such information from his party.
"I have no information that my name has been given for Railway minister," he said. Sources confermed tht a fax has been mailed to the Prime minister by Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday evening.
"Yes, I have written to the Prime Minister seeking his replacement with Mukul Roy, another union minister," Banerjee said.
Sources said that the Congress Core Group is meeting to take stock of the situation, soon after the Prime Minister received Mamata's fax.
The action of the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee came late on Wednesday night after Dinesh Trivedi's stout defence of his proposal for across-the-board increase in rail fares to net Rs 4,000 crore in the Budget.
Throughout the day after reading the rail budget in parliament, 61-year-old MBA from the The University of Texas Trivedi had been maintaining that whatever he had done was in the interest of the railways and the country and that he was not worried out the loss of his job.
Trinamool Congress, which has been toeing a populist line on issues like petrol price hike, asked him to rollback the increase and put him on notice that it would suggest another name to the Prime Minister as his replacement in the Railway Ministry.
Trinamool Congress party has also threatened to move cut motions on the issue and had decided to meet the PM to press for rollback.
Mukul Roy, Minister of State for Shipping, is a senior leader of Trinamool Congress who had earlier held the post of Minister of State for Railways for two years till July last year.
Earlier, Mamata Banerjee, summoned Trivedi to Kolkata. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MPs are also slated to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a rollback in rail fare hike.
The hike in passenger fares by Dinesh Trivedi had immediately drawn flak from his own party members - from spokesperson Derek O'Brien, to MP Sudip Bandopadhyay and other as well. Dinesh Trivedi in his defence said that he delivered the budget keeping the needs of the nation first, and then his party and state.
Trivedi found himself in a piquant situation immediately after he presented his maiden Railway budget in which he proposed an across-the-board hike in passenger fares to mop up an additional Rs 4,000 crore for spending on railway safety.
On a cue from TMC boss, Mamata Banerjee, party MPs attacked the hike and demanded a roll back in keeping with her populist politics which has resulted in repeated trouble for the UPA government over issues such as FDI in retail and petrol price hike.
Banerjee followed up with a public declaration that she will not allow the fare hike. She complained she had not not been consulted by Trivedi, which he confirmed.
