In 2015 the United States along with the other members of the P5 led successful negotiations for a nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) intended to dismantle Iran's nuclear weapons capabilities, and when Iran complied in 2016, sanctions on Iran were lifted.

According to this deal the Iran wasn't allowed to carry on uranium enrichment beyond 4%. Uranium enrichment is a process involving uranium purification which involves centrifugal extraction. This uranium enrichment within 10% is used for medical purposes , and upto 40% is used for energy production purpose and if purified above 95% can be used to make atomic bombs. Therefore this deal was to ensure that Iran does not produce any nuclear weapons which in turn could be threat to the West as there was always an ideological differences and in return Iran was safe from the sanctions.

But with cometh the man with agenda of 'Making America Great Again' i.e. Mr Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdraws the deal which in turn leads to another set of series of events where Iran in retaliation capturing Britains Stena Impermo cargo, bringing down two US drones etc which made the situation worse. But the worst was yet to come by US as on January 3rd it killed one of the war veterans and second major person of Iran after President and A major himself called Qassim Soleimani in an arial strike in Iraq .

This in turns leads to a series of threats in Twitter where Iranian president Hassan Rouhani vows that the revenge will be taken and Mr Trump threatening that 52 major sites of Iran which are culturally and economically important to Iran within the radar of loaded missiles of US. Amid all the tensions the major development in recent event is Iran withdrawing itself from the Nuclear deal which gives it acess to produce nuclear weapons which in turn can make the situation bitter.
