As most people these days have a cell phone of some kind, it is very likely that you have come across a phone by LG. They have a vast selection of cell phones ranging from basic ones to incredibly high-tech Android smartphones.

LG have designed their cell phones to help people connect and stay connected with things that matter the most. With this in mind, their new phones are sleek and stylish as well as being eco-friendly.

Two of the newest LG phones to hit the market are the LG G5 and the LG V20. While the LG V20 is a powerful phone, it is interesting to see how it compares to the LG G5.

Let’s look at the LG G5 vs LG V20

Design

Unfortunately, the design lets the phones down. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy S7, the body of the LG G5 (while looking great in pictures) has a slightly plastic/metallic body. It’s just not a classy finish. The V20 also has a minimalistic metal body although it uses aluminium in the covering. This makes the phone very light weight.

Both phones have a protective layer of Silicone Polycarbonate at the bottom and both phones have been drop tested to pass the US military standard drop. This means that both phones can be dropped from 4’, withstand the shock and still operate.

Another excellent feature on both phones is that they have a fingerprint scanner under the camera sensor which will act as a lock button.

Performance

For several years the LG V10 was the best phone to have and while the V20 is not as powerful, it is still a powerful phone.

Both the V20 and the G5 make use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 CPU and both phones come with 4GB of RAM which is more than enough for them.

The V20 has two storage options namely 32GB and 64GB while the G5 has only 32GB. V20 also has a microSD expansion of up to 2TB, which the G5 does not have.

Audio performance is also better on the V20 which offers Hi-fi Quad DAC playback.

Camera

Most people who buy the LG G5 admit that the camera is the best feature. The V20 has most of the same photographic elements although has a greater focus on a high-quality video. This is due to a feature which minimises the effect of movement when shooting video.

It does seem like LG is really going to town with video and audiophiles and the V20 comes with an impressive list of A/V recording technology. This even includes a Hi-fi video recording facility. The V20 comes with three microphones which enhance the quality of all the audio recordings.

When using the camera for still shots, both come with a16-megapixel camera. They both have a secondary wide-angle lens which ensures great landscape pictures every time.

Both phones come with an aperture of f1.8 which is great for low-light pictures. Both phones will record 4K video.

Where you will find a difference is on the selfie camera. The LG G5 comes with a single 8-megapixel camera while the V20 has a 5-megapixel camera as well as a 120-degree viewing angle. This means that you have a wider angle for selfies and can get more people into the picture.

An interesting feature of the LG V20 is the Auto Shot. This will automatically capture a selfie when it sees you smiling.

Display

The biggest difference between the two phones is their display. The G5 has a 5.3” while the V20 has a 5.7”. The G5 has a 2560 x 1440 LCD panel which is coated in Gorilla Glass 4 and this is the same for the V20.

What sets them apart is that with the V20 you will see a secondary 2.1” panel with resolution of 1040 x 160 x 513ppi. This display stays on all the time and you can change it depending on the app you are using.

Battery

The larger the phone the bigger the battery can be and here you will see that the LG V20 has a 3,200 Ah cell to keep it powered while the V5 has a 3,000Ah battery. It must be said that even the smaller battery will easily last through the whole day without going flat.

With both phones you will find that the battery is removable although this happens in different ways with them. The V20 has a flip-up mechanism which allows you to replace the battery quickly and easily.

Both phones have the feature of Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 as well as the USB charging port, and neither of them can be charged wirelessly.

Software

The V20 is the first phone to offer compatibility with Google’s In App search feature. This means that you can scan any built-in and third-party apps for any information you like from the Google Android app.

Additionally, the V20 is the first non-Nexus phone to run Google’s current release of Android.

Conclusion

While the LG G5 is a great phone, it still has a lot of little niggles, unlike the LG V20. It seems like LG have sorted out all the issues of the G5 and made the V20 without them.

The V20 has the better battery and screen size. It also has a better camera and is more powerful all round.

We almost want to say that LG got it right the second time around with the V20 and although the G5 is still a great phone, the V20 trumps it in overall performance and design.
