Having a good conclusion is important for any academic paper. However, when it comes to dissertation writing, the conclusion is of utmost significance for two simple reasons. First of all, it summarizes everything you have written in your dissertation and draws all your main points together. Second, it shows what your thesis is about and why your work is meaningful overall.

However, writing a good conclusion can be quite challenging. This is probably the reason why so many students use a somewhat “formula” of dissertation conclusions, which results in mediocre and dull papers. If you don’t want to be like them, but instead want to create a unique and appealing dissertation, you need to write an interesting and attractive conclusion. There are several good ways to succeed with this task:

1. Keep it concise.

Even though a dissertation represents a long research project, it does not mean that its concluding part should also be long. On the contrary, it should be concise yet informative and sound. The length of this chapter usually depends on the total number of pages and the amount of ideas in it, but rarely exceeds five pages.

2. Emphasize your knowledge.

A dissertation conclusion is the best part to emphasize your knowledge and include your recommendations on the researched topic or discussed problem. Besides, it is where you should offer certain solutions or show direction for any future research. In general, you can express any personal thoughts in this chapter, but keep them relevant to the topic.

3. Provide a brief summary.

A good dissertation conclusion should offer a brief summary of the main ideas and points of each chapter. These may include your key findings, new observations and insights, major arguments and disagreements, etc. Such a brief summary will remind the reader of the ground you have covered and of the importance of your work on the whole.

4. Present your findings in a clear manner.

To simply summarize your dissertation is definitely not enough for a good conclusion. You need to emphasize your research and outcomes by presenting your findings in a clear qualitative or quantitative manner so that they could be widely understood by any reader.

5. Don’t include anything new.

Whether it comes to any new ideas or sources you forgot to include in the previous chapters of your dissertation, don’t introduce them in the concluding part. You should work with only the data you have already presented. After all, a conclusion is intended to tie your points instead of discussing the new ones.

6. Assess the validity of your research.

Check, assess, and provide the information concerning the validity of your research. What are its contributions? Can your findings be used by future researchers? Go back to the major question and make sure you have answered it. Includeallthekeypointsinyourconclusion.
