Important Events Related To 1857 Revolt

The Revolt of 1857, also known as first war of Independence is must go through topic for the aspirants aspiring to get inducted into the India’s premier services offered by Union Public Service Commission. The prominent nationalist V.D Savarkar interpreted the 1857 revolt as Planed War or National Independence in his book First War of Indian Independence.

Here below are most important events associated with the revolt of 1857 in chronological order.

1856

  • Annexation of Awadh- Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Deposed.
  • Summary Settlement introduced, it included Awadh and North-Western Province.
  • Religious Disabilities Act and General Services Act were introduced.

 

1857

  • May 10, Mutiny at Meerut.
  • May 11-12, Revolt in Delhi, Mughal Emperor Bahadur Sah II Declared to be Emperor of Hindustan.
  • May 20-27, Sepoys revolted against British officers at Aligarh, Mainpuri and Etawah.
  • May 30, Revolt in Lucknow.
  • May- June, Revolt spreads to larger region including civilian population.
  • June 30, British got defeated in the battle of Chinhat (Outside Lucknow).
  • July , Shah mal was Killed by British.
  • June-Sept, British force sieges Delhi.
  • Sept 25, Under the leadership of Sir James Outram and Henry Havelock British force entered Lucknow presidency and Latter Sir Colin Campbell arrived there with reinforcements.
  • Nov 01, Lord Canning announced the Queens proclamation thus abolishing the company rule in India.
  • Dec, Kanpur was captured by Sir Colin Campbell.

 

1858

  • March, Lucknow was captured and Begum Hazrat Mahal escaped to Nepal.
  • May- June, Rani Laxmibai captured the Gwalior fort.
  • June, Rani Laxmibai died heroic death on battle field and Maulavi Ahmadullah Killed in encounter.
