Pre-Historical Period is an initial phase of human civilization point of view. The initial phase of civilization is definitely not a phase in which human is totally civilized. Hence, the pre-historic phase is phase is also called as the phase in which the prime activity of human was hunting and gathering food stuffs.

Pre-historical period do not have any written documents.  In order to accumulate the information about the pre-historic period, people take the help of Archeological findings such as tools made up of stones, slate, jewelry, coins, idols and pots made up of soil.

On the basis of available above Archeological findings, pre-historic period can be further classified into four different periods: Paleolithic period, Mesolithic Period, Neolithic Period and Metal Period.

Paleolithic Period

Paleolithic period is initial phase of Pre-Historic Period. Meanwhile it difficult to state the exact time of pre-historic period because emergence of human being is not a sudden phenomenon and do not have exact time.  Paleolithic Period is phase when human being started making tools with help of stones. And on the basis of tools found, scientist have sub divided the pre-historic period into Paleolithic period, Mesolithic Period, Neolithic Period and Metal Period.

On the basis of Human body structure it has been noted that during the Paleolithic period human body was similar to Paranthropus, which is also known as Java Man. Next was Sinanthropus which is also called as Peking Man. After this Neanderthal man come into existence. By this time human race were aware of the use of fire.

Exact knowledge of the Pre-Historical Period of Jharkhand is not available, but archeological evidence suggests that Sighbhum, Hazaribag, Damodar Valley, Deoghar, Bokaro, and Ranchi had essence of Pre-Historical Period.  Here semi-human was learning to build the permanent houses and hunting was the prime activity, which supported living.
