Forged in the hearts of supernovas and used as an essential ingredient in products as diverse as paint and the International Space Station, titanium is immensely important to the way we live our lives. It is extremely resistant to corrosion and heat, and its low density and high strength makes it an invaluable component in the manufacturing of aeroplanes and ship hulls. The pigment titanium dioxide is also used in cosmetics and toothpaste. In short, titanium has a myriad of uses. And one place that it is crucial is in the automobile industry, where strength and durability of parts is essential in keeping the costs of manufacturing low. Using hard-wearing parts also lessens the need for expensive repair works, the cost of which, as every car owner knows, can mount up.

Titanium As An Internal Component

The strong and lightweight qualities of titanium make it ideal as a resilient and long-lasting component in car manufacturing, a field where speed, efficiency and durability need to dovetail perfectly. It can withstand temperatures of over 400 degrees centigrade and is stronger than steel. The main applications of the metal are in the manufacture of valves, rods and suspension springs, while the versatile nature of a titanium sheet means it is more commonly used in pipework and silencers. The low density in titanium can reduce the load of a car and consequently reduce its fuel consumption.

Exterior Design

Whilst titanium is used extensively for manufacturing internal car components, it is less common as an exterior metal. Titanium has a distinctive look and texture: a naturally lustrous silver quality with a bluish sheen. There is an undeniable beauty to it, and there are already examples of it being used as an automobile exterior in such notable examples of supercars such as the Icona Vulcano. However, due to its tensile strength, titanium can be difficult to form and mend, so it isn’t seen as the most suitable material to be used in the mass manufacture and repair of automobile exteriors. There’s also the issue of its inherent strength being an issue when it comes to collisions. The bodywork may not crumple sufficiently if involved in an accident, which may raise safety concerns.

Titanium has many properties that make it beneficial in the design of vehicles on both land and sea. It has a unique combination of strength, resistance and lightness that makes it perform well as an internal component. However, the aesthetic qualities of titanium as a design component in automobile manufacturing may, for the moment at least, need to remain overshadowed by these other more vital and hardworking qualities.
