Measuring refractive index of the products is inevitable in many cases and so is the use of Refractometers. However, it is not just to measure the refractive index, to identify different substances; this device is largely used in the laboratories and the fields. Since the inception of this device, there are primarily four types- Analog or conventional Refractometer, Digital Refractometer, Abbe or Clinical Refractometer and Inline Process Refractometer.

The Analog or the conventional Refractometer is a handheld device, used for measuring the refractive index of any given liquid sample. The device works on the simple critical angle principle, where the prism and the lenses venture a shadow line onto a small glass reticle present within the instrument. User can see the shadow line by means of the large eyepiece. The sample is mainly placed between the measuring prism and the cover plate. When light travels through the sample, either gets completed internally reflected or passes through the reticle. Between the dark and the illuminated area, a shadow-line is formed, when this shadow line crosses the range, a reading is taken. While you choose to buy the Refractometer, make sure you buy the one that features automatic temperature compensation, as refractive index is quite temperature dependant. Devices without automatic temperature compensation might ends up giving you inaccurate results.

There are two main types of the Analog Refractometers-

-          Handheld Refractometers: This kind of Refractometers is used to control the blend ratios of different industrial liquids.

-          Digital Handheld Refractometers: The digital handheld Refractometers have more functions than the handheld devices. These kinds of devices can be connected to a PC via serial interface. You can get the software from the vendor you are buying your device.

-          Manual handheld Refractometers: It is the ideal type for regular use. This device features various scales and additional functions that are required to give accurate results.

The handheld Refractometers has find its application in different fields- food processing, advanced physics, clinical research, pharmacology to name a few. For instance, Refractometers are used to measure sugar in grape and other fresh fruits. This device is again used to check if honey is good or ruined.
