Functions Of Personel Management

Personnel Management is that field of Management which has to do with planning, organising and controlling various operative activities of procuring, developing, maintaining, integrating of personnel in an organisation that the objective and interest for which the Enterprise is established, are attained as effectively and efficiently as possible.  

Personnel Management involves two categories of functions - planning, organising, motivating and controlling are common to all Managers, including Personnel Managers and are performed by all of them.  That is why it is sometimes said General Management (Personnel Management are one and the same thing).

The planning function of a Personnel Manager pertains to the steps taken in determining a course of action.  

This involves developing a personnel programme and specifying what and how operative personnel function are to be performed.  After plans have been developed, the Personnel Managers  must establish an organisation to carry them out.  

The function, therefore, calls for grouping of personnel activities, assignment of different groups of activities to different individuals, delegation of authority to carry them out and provision of coordination of authority relationship horizontally and vertically in the organisation's structure.

Motivation involves guiding and supervising the personnel.  Personnel Manager must inculcate in the workers a keen appreciation of the enterprise policies.  He must guide them towards improved performance and motivate them to work with zeal and confidence.

Control involves measuring performance, correcting negative deviations and assuring the accomplishment of plans through direct objectives, direct supervision as well as reports, records and audits personnel management assures itself that its activities are being carried out in accordance with the plans.

Maintenance

Records, research & Audit.
