DELHI: In what would come as a major sigh of relief for cricketing fans, especially in India, the Supreme Court of India has allowed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organise the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

As per the IPL 7 updates, this comes against the backdrop of the same court’s ruling earlier that the chief of the BCCI, Mr N. Srinivasan, step down with immediate effect due to his alleged connection with certain people involved in a betting scandal during the previous editions of the tournament. The ruling also questioned the appropriateness of involving two teams, the Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings, in the tournament, in light of their implication in the said scandal.

As Mr Srinivasan stepped down of his accord, former Indian opening batsman Mr Sunil Gavaskar was appointed to oversee all matter regarding the organisation of IPL 7. Also the two teams in question were allowed to play in the tournament, which would be a further sigh of relief for the respective fans.

The IPL is the flagship Twenty 20 (T20) tournament conducted in India every year. Based on the club format popularly followed in football, the competition involves eight clubs, with double round robin matches and the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs.

One of the most watched contests in the world, it is a big money spinner for the BCCI with IPL 7 live streaming itself fetching astronomical amounts. The latest edition will feature round robin matches in the UAE due to date clashes with the Indian General Elections.
