Important Points Regarding Hamid Ansari Visit To Rwanda And Uganda In February 2017

Our Vice President honorable Hamid Ansari paid official visit to Rwanda and Uganda, in an amicable gesture to strengthen ties with the East African countries.

This meet in February 2017 is marked as the first high- level visit to Uganda from India since 1997 and first high-level visit to Rwanda.

Relations between India and Uganda:

Country: Uganda

Capital: Kampala

Currency: Ugandan shilling

Prime Minister: Ruhakana Rugunda (head of state)

  • There is, at present, a 30,000-strong Indian community in Uganda that is heavily invested in the economy of the country.
  • India is one of the largest trade partners of Uganda. Bilateral trade is estimated to around US$ 615 million.
  • Ethnic tensions between Indians and Ugandans have been a recurring issue in bilateral relations given the role of Indians in the Ugandan economy.

Mutual consents and agreements:

  • Agreement to cooperate in the vocational training, space technology and peaceful uses of atomic energy.
  • The Vice President also presented medicines worth US$ 2million and medical equipment worth US$ 1million to Uganda.
  • India supports some development projects in Uganda, including a tele- medical center at the national referral hospital that is connected to 11 hospitals in India.

Capital: Kigali

Currency: Rwandan franc

President: Paul Kagame (head of state)

  • Rwanda has about 3,000 people from Indian community.
  • India is represented in Rwanda through its Honorary Consulate in Kigali.

Mutual consents and agreements:

  • India and Rwanda have concluded a bilateral air services agreement enabling direct flights between the two countries.
  • The other two MoUs pertained to the setting up of an entrepreneurial development center in Rwanda and exemption of visa for entry of diplomatic and official passports.
  • Vice President launched the India-Rwanda Innovation Growth Program as a major Science and Technology initiative.
  • The Vice president reiterated India’s decision to open a resident Indian Mission in Rwanda highlighting that this will further cement the strategic partnership.
  • Vice president also paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 massacre at the Kigali Genocide Museum.
