It is surprising, but it is true. India is Nation to have its very first research reactor before the countries like Japan and China. India very first reactors Apsara become operational on August 4, 1956. It used enriched uranium as fuel road and cadmium as control rods.

Next comes Cirus, India’s second research reaction. It was built under the Indo-Canadian project under the Colombo plan. This project was completed on 10 July 1960. It uses natural uranium as fuel, operated on heavy water, cooled with the light water and had high flux research reactor with a terminal power of 40 mw. It is situated at Trombay.

Adding to the list, Zerlina is India’s third research reactor. The name stands for zero lattice investigation nuclear assembly as it studies lattice assemblies of different kinds. The reactor attained critically on January 14, 1961. Natural Uranium is the fuel and heavy water the moderator.

Purnima is India’s first experimental zero energy fast breeder reactor. It attained critically on May 22, 1972. It uses plutonium oxide as fuel. Purnima is used to train personal in the operational of plutonium fuelled fast reactor.

The fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) at Kalpakkam and the Dhruva Research reactor at Trombay were entirely designed and built indigenously. The fast breeder reactors are more complex as concerned with the technology used but they deliver more fuel than they consume.

A landmark in rector technology was reached in 1984 when the small test rector Purnima II was commissioned at BARC. It was fuelled by uranium 233 obtained from thorium abundantly found in beach sands of Kerala.
