A Kolkata based Anglo-Indian Norman Pritchard, Participated in the Paris Games (1900) and won two silver medals in 200m sprint and 200m hurdles. Thus, he became first Indian to have won Olympic medals.

Indian officially participated in the Olympics for the first time in the sixth Olympic Games 1920 at Antwerp, Belgium.

The Indian Olympic council was established in 1924. Sir Sorabjee J. Tata was its first president.

  • 2008: Vijender Kumar won Bronze medal in Men's 75 kg Middleweight.

  • 1928: Won Gold Medal.

  • 1936: Won Gold Medal.
  • 1948: Won Gold Medal.
  • 1956: Won Gold Medal.
  • 1960: Won Silver Medal.
  • 1968: Won Bronze Medal.
  • 1972: Won Bronze Medal.

Shooting

  • 2004: Rajya Vardhan Singh Rathore won Silver medal in double trap.
  • 2008: Abhinav Binbra won Gold Medal in Men's 10m air rifle.

Tennis

  • 1996: Lender Paes won Bronze Medal in men's single event.

Weightlifting

  • 2000: Karmam Maleshwari won Bronze Medal in women's 69 kg category.

Wrestling

  • 1952: Digviji Kha Shaba Jadav won Bronze Medal in men's 52-57 kg freestyle.
  • 2008: Sushil Kumar won Bronze Medal in men's 66 kg freestyle.
