Artificial diamonds are basically man-made diamonds mirroring natural diamonds. While some people refer to lab-created diamonds as ‘fake’ ones, that is not necessarily true. Because lab-created diamonds have almost the same or similar chemical properties as a natural one while also not being noticeably different appearance-wise. They are also usually as hard as natural diamonds. While they have almost identical chemical structures as they both share carbon as the main element with slight chemical differences, there are things like price and resale value where a significant difference can be observed. This might confuse someone interested in diamond jewellery. One might ask - ‘which one should I buy if there is no visible difference between Lab-grown diamonds Vs Natural diamonds but the price gap is so big?’. It’s not an easy question to answer as not all people have the same priority.
The first thing to consider is the price difference. These days, lab-created diamonds can be acquired at a 30-50% cheaper price than a natural one. If you are wondering what might be the cause, it is due to supply. With synthetic diamonds, the supply is not limited. But that’s not the case for natural ones. Prices of lab-created diamonds are still decreasing at a consistent rate to this day which might cause even more of a significant price difference between Lab-grown diamonds Vs Natural diamonds in the future.
Now comes resale value, which is actually even bigger than the price difference between the two kinds. You can never expect a lab-created diamond to have the same initial value as a natural one as natural diamonds are rising in value. Sustainability is something to keep in mind as well. Diamonds grown in a lab are usually considered a more sustainable option than natural ones.
All in all, some people just have a thing for the ‘real thing’ and hence would choose natural diamonds over lab-created ones anyway as they are produced by nature. In the end, it mainly just depends on someone’s own priority.
