When it comes to your personal data, more information about you is stored than at any other time in human history. Never before have we had such a collage of information both online and offline about us at any one time. However, it is essential that you take the time to secure yourself to make sure that your time online is consistently safe as it should be.

But at the same time, you should look to secure your data online. How can you look to unify this approach for long-term safety?

Prioritize and organize data by type

There are some things you simply should not keep online, and some things you should always keep online. For example, we would recommend avoiding writing down your master password for a password manager (see below).

However, we would recommend avoiding keeping things like passports or birth certificates online. So long as you have a secure place to keep them in-person, we would do so. If possible, though, try and make copies for such essential documents so that if anything goes wrong, you know you have a secure and safe edition that is kept elsewhere.

Get a password manager as soon as possible

Keeping your passwords written down in a little journal might seem smart, but it does make it easier to lose those passwords. Instead, we recommend you make things simpler: get a password manager tool.

You can then use this tool to keep all of your passwords in the one singular place. Password managers will go an extra mile in ensuring you can keep your passwords unique, whilst only having to remember one master password. Now, if any other passwords are leaked or lost, it means your other data is secure.

Utilize a virtual private network

One of the best ways to keep your data secure online is to use a virtual private network, or VPN. Such tool is quite useful, allowing you to easily view things like geoblocked internet addresses or get access to content that might be dangerous for you to visit in your own country. For example, many people browse outside what their government permits, such as those living in oppressed regimes, by using a VPN to help them browse around without being discovered.

Since a VPN cloaks where you are browsing from, it allows anonymous browsing with ease.

Make the most of the cloud

Today, one of the wisest investments you could make is in a cloud computing solution. This would allow you to easily secure your data online, as well as keep copies or key offline information that could be stored digitally for an extra layer of security.

Clouds allow for easier file storage than using something that might perish or be lost, like a DVD or USB pen drive. The more information that you can keep stored digitally in secure locations, the more likely it is that you can retain that information and stay safe for years to come.
