The term “inventor” is usually associated exclusively with men. However, many important inventions were made by women. But our “men’s world” is silent about it. Maybe you don’t know, but a circular saw, a periscope for submarines, a body armor and much more are among the female inventions. Today you will know about the most famous female inventors. But first, take a look at Russian women. Maybe you will find one more inventor among them.
1. Elizabeth Lee Hazen and Rachel Fuller Brown, Nystatin
Nystatin is the first antibiotic that destroys fungal infections. In 1950, it was singled out by two talented women, physicians from New York. Hazen discovered Streptomyces noursei bacteria in the soil on the farm of her friend. To date, the drug Nystatin can be bought at every pharmacy.
2. Virginia Apgar, Apgar Score
These words are heard by every mother in the delivery room, as well as gender, weight, and height of a baby. In 1952, an obstetric anesthetist began checking the status of newborns in 1 and 5 minutes after birth in order to determine whether children need special care. This is how the Apgar score appeared. The doctors started to use the scale in order to remember the main indicators. Observing the breathing, reflexes, skin color, tone and pulse of a baby in the first minutes of life, doctors can quickly evaluate it on a 10-point scale and decide on the need for further procedures, including reanimation.
3. Martha Koston, Flares
Previously, the connection between the ships was limited. It was carried out with the help of colored flags, lanterns, and shout. Martha Koston found notes belonging to her loved one. Koston had been working with chemists for many years and experimented with pyrotechnics in order to translate the idea of her man into reality.
4. Tabitha Babbitt, Circular saw
This girl from the American sect fought for gender equality, including physical labor. She understood how irrational forces are spent when working with a two-handed saw and created a toothed disk. Every man should thank her.
5. Sarah Mather, Periscope for submarines
The prototype of the periscope was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 1430s, and in 1845, an American, Sarah Mather, patented the invention. There is also a version that the operational prismatic periscope for a submarine was first implemented in the United States during the civil war of 1861 by the American Thomas Douti. But nevertheless, the invention is associated precisely with this woman.
6. Patricia Billings, Silicone
Patricia Billings was a sculptor, and she set herself the task of creating such a cement additive that would prevent her creations from destruction. After several years of experimentation, in 1970, she finally achieved her goal and invented indestructible plaster. Soon after, Billings discovered that the material was also remarkably resistant to fire.
7. Marion Donovan, Diapers
When Marion became a mother, she thought about how to make life with a baby easier. Thus, a diaper was invented. It would seem that the whole world should immediately bow to this woman. However, the first attempts to find a manufacturer of diapers met with a complete lack of understanding. Men said: “Diapers? What?! Who needs it?” And Marion proved that women need it.
8. Josephine Cochrane, Dishwasher
The granddaughter of the inventor of the steamer invented the dishwasher in 1887 because she was extremely annoyed by the way the servants handled expensive china. To the great regret of Josephine, the importance of this thing in everyday life was understood only 40 years later.
