PATNA: A joint study conducted by University of Manchester, United Kingdom and Mahavir Cancer Institute and Research Centre Phulwarisharif in Patna has found uranium contamination in 10 districts of Bihar.
This is first evidence that uranium content has been detected in groundwater in Bihar. The concentration of uranium is elevated mostly in North West- South East band along the Gandak river and running south of the Ganga river towards Jharkhand. The maximum concentration of Uranium was noticed in the Supaul district of Bihar, 80 micrograms per liter.
Uranium Contamination In India: According to World Health Organization (WHO) the permissible limit is 30 microgram per liter. However, unlike the limits for arsenic and other toxic heavy metals specified in the under Bureau of Indian Standers Drinking water specifications, there is no limit maintained for Uranium.
Earlier as per report of Central Ground Water Board, In India the states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujrat and Haryana noted widespread Uranium contamination in groundwater.
Harmful Effects of Uranium to Human Heath
Accelerating Factor: The human activities like over pumping of ground water enhance the Uranium contamination to ground water. The overuse groundwater reduces the water table and creates oxidising conditions which leads to uranium solubility in the water. Interaction of the uranium with other chemicals in the groundwater, such as bicarbonate can further accelerate the solubility.
