Submarines are unique furtive weapons that were extensively used during the First World War. It can remain hidden in war from the watchful eyes of the enemy for an infinite period of time, provided there is an enough stock of food supplies for its crew. The submarines of modern times can proficiently carry out a full-fledged nuclear attack and carry nuclear reactors of their own for power. Let’s have a look at the world’s top 5 nuclear submarines. They are considered as the most deadly and fearsome in the world.

At No. 1 we have USA’s Virginia Class

Units Built

7

Speed

25+ knots

Active

7

Range

Effectively infinite

Endurance

Effectively infinite

Weapons Carried

12 x perpendicular hose system for UGM

4 X 533 millimeter bow hose for Mk 48 torpedoes and 109 Tomahawk missiles

or

Smart mines instead of torpedoes

These innovative submarines are replacements for the outmoded Los Angeles class of submarines.  The submarine incorporates sophistication never seen before in any other submarine class. It uses telescoping photonics masts in place of traditional periscope. Each mast comprises of infrared sensors, light intensification, laser rangefinder, high resolution cameras, and built-in (ESM) Electronic Support Measures.

Soviet Union’s Akula II Class stands at No.2

Units Built

15

Speed

12 knots when on surface

33 knots  when submerged

Active

9

Range

Effectively infinite

Endurance

100 days

Weapons Carried

4 x 533 millimeter, 4 x 650 millimeter torpedo hose for nearly 40 missiles or torpedoes

or

42 mines instead of torpedoes

Akula II scores a point over Akula when it comes to noise reduction - which the West was concerned about. For acoustics was considered the most noteworthy aspect in the submarine technology of the US.

At No. 3 is Seawolf Class which belongs to the USA

Units Built

3

Speed

35 knots when submerged

18 knots when on surface

Active

3

Range

Effectively infinite

Endurance

?

Weapons Carried

8 x 660 millimeter torpedo hose for 50 cruise missiles or torpedoes

or

100 mines instead of missiles or torpedoes

They are faster and better than Los Angeles class. Budget constraints led to the cancellation of its full-fledged production. Only 3 Seawolf class submarines could be therefore be completed.

We have United Kingdom’s Astute Class at No. 4

Units Built

7 planned

Speed

29 knots

Active

1

Range

Effectively infinite

Endurance

90 days

Weapons Carried

6 x 533 millimeter bow hose for 36 Spearfish torpedoes, anti-ship Harpoon missiles instead of torpedoes, Tomahawk cruise missiles

or

Mines instead of torpedoes

These are the largest and the most powerful nuclear submarine belonging to the Royal Navy. It can hold 38 torpedoes altogether. It is home to high-tech pressurized water reactor.  They are more multifarious than space shuttle.

China’s type 093 at No.5

Units Built

6 – 8 planned

Speed

35 knots

Active

2-3

Range

Effectively infinite

Endurance

80 days

Weapons Carried

6 x 533 millimeter torpedo hose YJ – 82 anti-ship missiles

They are among the best in business. They will soon replace the Type 091.
