The International Date Line is an imaginary line, which follows meridian of 180 degree.  Basic idea of International Date Line and Time Zone evolved from International Meridian Conference 1884, In which world was divided into 24 Standard time zones, each extending over 15 degree longitude.

The local solar time of the Greenwich was selected as the Standard time for the entire system. The Prime meridian became the centre of the time Zone that extends 7.30 degree of longitude both East and West of the prime meridian. Similarly, the multiples of the 15, both east and west of the prime meridian were set as central meridians for the 23 other time zones.

An individual travelling eastwards gains the time until he reaches the meridian 180 degree east. Similarly, while traveling westwards losses time until he reaches 180 west.  There is thus 24 hours difference between the two sides of the 180 degree meridian. This is the International Date Line (IDL) were the date changes exactly one day when it is crossed. A traveler crossing the date line from east to west loses a day and while crossing the dateline from west to east he gains a day.

Important Fact Associated with International Date Line

The IDL Deviates from 180 degree meridian in the Bering Sea to include all the Aleution island of Alaska within the same day and again in the south pacific to keep island in the same Group within the same day.

The westward movement of time is created by planet turning Eastward on its axis.

The new day first appears at IDC. For 24 hours it advances westward direction around the globe and for next 24 hours leaves the globe. So, it takes 48 hours for the final exit of the first appearance of the particular day.

It must be kept in mind that IDL is in the middle of the time zone. Therefore no time zone changes at that point only change of day takes places.
