Understanding The Distribution Of Atmospheric Pressure Across Blue Planet

Air has weight and the column of air extending vertically over a given area on the earth's surface exerts pressure. This is called atmospheric pressure. Pressure is measured as a force exerted per unit area. The most commonly used unit of measurement of pressure is millibar (mb). One mb is equal to a force of 1000 dynes per square cm.Pressure is measured with the help of instrument called barometer.

Normally pressure in inversely related to temperature. Moreover, with the increase of elevation pressure also falls, just like temperature. The distribution of pressure is highly uneven and this is partly a result of the variation in distribution of temperature. Another major control of pressure is the dynamic factor caused by the rotation of the earth and the ascent and decent of the air. Under the thermal control the pressure tends to rise from equator to poles. At the same time the air in the equatorial regions is thrown away from earth while in the polar areas it is pulled inward. This factor adds to the influence of temperature in the sense that equatorial area will have a still lower pressure and the polar areas will have a still higher pressure. Thus two belts of the high pressure, one over each polar region and one belt of low pressure around the equator are produced. The air rising in the equatorial regions descends around the equator are produced. The air rising in the equatorial regions descends around 30 degree north and south and there are produced two belts of high pressure in the subtropical regions of the both hemispheres. Due to the rotation of the earth the air is pulled inwards in the Polar Regions and this causes a rarification of the atmosphere in the sub-polar latitudes thus producing two belts of low pressure centered around 60 degree north and south of both the hemispheres. Thus a total seven belts of pressure, the equatorial low, the subtropical high (two belts), the sub-polar low ( two belts) and the polar high( two belts) are produced on the Earth.

This pressure distribution system is called as planetary distribution pressure. This distribution assumes uniformity of surface conditions all over the earth. The pressure distribution under each such condition all over the earth. The pressure distribution all over the earth is determined by the two factors , the thermal factor and the dynamic factor. While the equatorial belt of low pressure and the polar belts of high pressure are mainly result of the thermal control., the subtropical belts of high pressure and sub polar belt of low pressure are primarily result of dynamic control.
