Water Heater Leak Repair - Dealing With An Emergency Leak

A leaking water heater is one of the plumbing problems you do not want to have, especially during the winter. It can mean taking cold showers that may bring on a ton of health complications for you and your loved ones.The good news is there is something you can do about it.

That way, you can prevent a small leak from becoming a big, expensive plumbing problem before your emergency water heater repair service gets to you.

So, what to do when you notice awater heater leakage issue?

1.      Turn off the water heater’s energy source

This is the second thing you’ll want to do. The first is to take care that you do not lean on or come into direct contact with the heated tank. It could cause you serious burns.

Now, water heaters are either electric or gas-powered.

Here’s what to do when you have either system.

·       How to turn off a gas water heater

Locate the water heater’s thermostat. Turn the gas control valve, so that it is perpendicular across the gas pipe, to cut off the gas supply.

·       How to turn off an electric water heater

First, do not touch a wet electric water heater. You do not want to be electrocuted.

Then locate the heater’s circuit breaker and turn it fully off.

That way, the water in the tank will not continue to heat up and accumulate even more pressure, which can, in turn, cause the leak to worsen within minutes or hours.

2.      Stop the water inflow

The next step is to turn off the water supply on the cold inlet pipes. If your heater has a gate-style valve, turn it clockwise until it won’t turn anymore.

If you have a ball-style valve, turn it 180 degrees on either side.

Shut your home’s main water supply. 

3.      Check for the leak

With the water still in it, look around the tank with the lights fully on.

Remember: Do not touch the hot gas water heater or wet electric heater.

Now check the following areas:

·       Cold inlet and hot outlet—pay close attention to the joints

·       Ensure your water pressure reads 80 PSI

·       The pressure relief valve

·       The drain valve

·       Dry the pool of water collecting at the bottom and see if it could be leaking around the area

Whatever you find to be the problem, call a professional to handle it for you. The goal is not to cause any more damage to your water heater. Remember, even the most expensive water heater repair session is still more affordable than a water heater replacement.

4.      Drain the water tank

If your 24/7 water heater repair service has not arrived yet, drain the hot water using a garden hose connected to the drain on the bottom.

Direct the water to your bathroom or sewerage system to avoid ruining your lawn’s grass or staining your driveway.

5.      Call your emergency water heater repair service

Be sure to describe the nature of the leak you’ve just troubleshot and confirmed.

If you didn’t get the precise location of the leak, just describe the problem as best as you can. That way, the professionals will know what special equipment, parts, and specialist plumbers to have along.
