India is all set to make global history in agricultural science. For the first time, an International Sugarcane Research Center will open its doors at the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (RPCAU), Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar.
This landmark project will be the first of its kind in India, and only the fifth such center in the entire world — placing Bihar on the global agri-tech map.
Sugarcane is not just a crop. It powers a multi-billion-dollar industry, feeding everything from food and beverages to biofuels and ethanol. Now, with climate change, soil degradation, and rising input costs, the need for advanced sugarcane research has never been more urgent.
This center will be set up in collaboration with the International Sugarcane Research and Innovation Center (GSRIC) and global partners under the CIMMYT-like model for sugarcane.
The center will bring state-of-the-art biotechnology and precision agriculture to sugarcane farming in India and South Asia. Key focus areas include:
High-yield sugarcane varieties adapted to Indian climates
Disease- and drought-resistant strains
Sustainable farming methods reducing water and fertilizer use
Genomic research for better crop resilience
Export-ready hybrid seeds to increase India’s global sugar competitiveness
According to Dr. Dileep Kumar, Director of Research at RPCAU, "This initiative will empower Indian farmers with future-ready sugarcane technologies, while also boosting our global footprint in agricultural science."
India is the world’s second-largest sugar producer after Brazil. However, productivity per hectare remains low due to outdated farming practices. This new center is expected to:
Boost sugarcane productivity by 30–50%
Create thousands of jobs in rural Bihar and Eastern India
Enhance ethanol production, supporting India’s energy independence
Reduce reliance on sugarcane imports and improve export capacity
Attract global investment and agri-tech startups
With sugar prices soaring globally, this project is perfectly timed to make India a major sugar technology exporter.
Pusa is already home to one of India’s most respected agri-research universities. It has the soil, climate, talent, and institutional infrastructure to lead climate-smart sugarcane innovation. The presence of local farmers, government support, and connectivity makes it an ideal research and commercialization hub.
Through this center, farmers will get:
On-ground training in sugarcane best practices
Access to next-gen seed varieties
Real-time data analytics and drone-based monitoring
Better access to biofertilizers, pest control, and water-saving techniques
This is more than research—it’s education, empowerment, and economic transformation.
The center’s preliminary phase is expected to kick off by late 2025, with full operations by early 2026. Land has already been earmarked, and international experts have begun initial site reviews.
This sugarcane research center marks the beginning of Green Revolution 2.0—with smarter, climate-friendly crops and farmer-first innovation. As food systems face pressure from climate change, India is not just reacting — it's leading from the front.
This isn’t just about sugarcane. This is about transforming agriculture, economy, exports, and employment—one research seed at a time.
India’s first international sugarcane research center will soon stand tall in Pusa — a symbol of India’s sweet success story in science, sustainability, and self-reliance.
