In a landmark move for environmental preservation, India has officially inaugurated its first butterfly sanctuary in the Aralam Forest of Kerala’s Kannur district. With this announcement, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary has now been renamed to Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary, turning into a one-of-a-kind dedicated ecosystem exclusively for butterflies.
This sanctuary is nestled in the Western Ghats, one of the world's most ecologically sensitive and species-rich regions. Spanning over 55 square kilometers, the sanctuary is now a permanent refuge for more than 266 butterfly species, including many rare and endangered ones.
With deforestation and urbanization threatening delicate species, this initiative brings a much-needed focus on insect conservation, especially of pollinators like butterflies, which are crucial for healthy ecosystems. The Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary is not only the first of its kind in India, but it also places the country on the global biodiversity map in a whole new way.
This sanctuary is expected to boost eco-tourism and create opportunities for sustainable development in Kerala. Tourists, researchers, conservationists, and wildlife photographers will now have a dedicated haven to observe rare butterfly behaviors and migratory patterns in their natural habitat.
