Hopefully, you are taking care of your skin. Sticking to a daily skincare routine is necessary for a refreshed and glowing skin. But sometimes you might get confused due to some randomly floating skincare myths, like you don’t have to put on the sunscreen on a cloudy day (of course it's completely wrong).
There is another famous myth about dermatologists “there is no need to go for a dermatology consulting” it is wrong too. Because we don’t know about our skin in depth. But the dermatologists are skin specialists and treat the skin issues scientifically.
Last week I was talking to my friend who is a dermatologist in Karachi and practices at the Ashfaq Memorial Hospital. She told me some very common skincare myths floating around and advised me to take good care of my skin.
Here, I have shared some common skincare myths which you need to know!
Myth1: Makeup wipes are the best choice to remove makeup
Is your skin susceptible to hyperpigmentation? Then you should know that makeup wipes are the biggest enemy of your skin. They cause friction and progressively damage the skin. Moreover, they contain alcohol that affects the sensitive skin.
A best alternative could be coconut oil. You just have to dip a cotton ball in oil and it will magically wipe off all the makeup and impurities.
There are a lot of skin myths. Most of the time you have heard these lines “Avoid touching your face to prevent acne” but touching is not the only reason for your damaged skin.
My dermatologist warned me about talking on the phone without headphones and scrolling on my phone and then touching my face afterward. Because our phones are more crowded with the bacteria as compared to the toilet seats.
So, apparently hands are not the only reason for skin damage or infection, there are many other things which shouldn't come close to your face.
Many of us have the habit of using skincare products of our own. In this way, we are damaging our skin because we are not aware of the real cause of the problem. Like incase of acne, there can be many reasons so if we use the common product, it may worsen the condition.
But dermatologists are skin specialists. They see the cause with scientific education and experience and solve the problem.
How do you know it’s working? What causes the damage? Is your skin going into shock because of a new product or are the ingredients not a fit for your skin?
These questions are one’s dermatologists can help you answer — or even start asking.
We often hear that “Don’t worry your acne will go away as you leave your 20’s”. But that is not the case. Anyone can have acne at any phase of life. Be it man or woman either in their 20’s or 50’s. Similarly, treatment principles will also remain the same.
Not everyone who has acne as a teenager will grow out of it, and even if you had clear skin as a teenager, there's no guarantee that you won't get acne later in life, perhaps during menopause. Acnes are actually the game of your hormones. Women are most likely to have acne because after puberty their hormones constantly fluctuate. But that is not the case for men. Therefore, women mostly face acne issues around their menstrual days. What do you think about the association between acne, food and stress?
Everyone wants to look young throughout life. That’s why we try to use such products that prevent wrinkles. But till date, there is no magical product that can make wrinkles disappear or prevent them.
Routine use of sunscreen can be a best option but there is more too!
Don’t confuse the lines caused by dryness with the wrinkles. These can be healed with a good moisturizer. Wrinkles on the other hand are the result of skin breakout. The best remedy for these wrinkles is either surgery. These days there are many expensive beauty products available.
It is the oldest saying and still in belief that “Natural ingredients are better for skin then synthetic ones”. But there is not scientific evidence behind these lines.
I hope this article will be helpful for many who believe in myths about skin care.
