Bombay Blood (hh) : Must Know Facts About This Rare Blood Type

Bombay blood (hh) is the rarest blood ever discovered. It attains its name from the place of discovery (Bombay, 1952). Bombay blood is very rare and is typically found in 1 Indian out of every 10,000 Indian. Person having Bombay blood can accept only from other Bombay Type blood.

Biology behind Bombay (hh) Blood: Each blood type contains red blood cells (RBC) which floats in plasma. RBC carries a set of markers on their surface which the plasma interacts with. The RBC and Plasma compatibility makes blood type significant. In Bombay blood, the markers on RBC are determined by master type called H, out of which A, B, AB AND AO are generated.

During blood transfusion the RBC and plasma compatibility becomes vital. Thus following are best possible combination for blood transfusions.

People with A type blood can accept A or O type and not from AB or B type.

People with B type blood can accept A or O type and can donate to AB or B type.

People with AB type blood can accept from any one and donate to other AB.

People with O type blood can accept only from O and CAN donate to A, B, O and AB (Universal Donor).

However, the hh type can accept from only hh type. This makes Bombay blood very special.
