UPSC had already released the sample question for the CSAT examination prior to conduct the CSAT Examination.
Although one set of CSAT was successfully conducted by the UPSC in 2011 but still the important of the first sample paper released by the UPSC can't be rule out because this is the basis of the examination so carefully analysis of the syllabus and the paper is musr warranted fact while preparing for the examination..
You have come across a case wherein an old sick lady is unable to submit her life certificate and claim pension to meet her treatment expenses. Knowing your superior's procedural approach in handling issues, you...
(a) Go strictly as per the procedures
(b) Take initiative to help the lady arranging for alternative documents
(c) Assist the lady with some money on your own but do not compromise on procedures.
(d) Avoid some procedural steps since you understand the necessity of the lady.
Seemingly easy, like all other reasoning or decision making questions, this question almost tempts you to take it easy. But picking a particular option sneakily tells more about your personality than you yourself know.
Say: If you pick option (a), and you are just not IAS material, but someone who is not trained to be a leader, a blind rule follower, just a file pusher, or put simply apt to be a clerk. Wrong Option.
Pick option (b) and you conform to the attributes of an IAS officer, someone who sticks to rules and is a proactive resourceful leader, who can work out a practical solution for people who deserve your help. Best Option.
Pick option (c) and you exhibit an escapist tendency. Not a person who takes problems headlong but who satisfies his or her guilt pangs or scores a brownie for conscience and doles out a few cents to get rid of the lady but doesn't have the ability to solve her issues. Wrong Option.
Pick option (d) you make the biggest mistake. As an IAS officer, you are the one who has made others stick to the laws, but you try finding an easy way out of solving this problem by bending a few rules a.k.a. procedures, then you are out of reckoning. Wrong Option.
General Mental Ability (GMAT): GMAT is an area which has been placed different from the GS paper of the old examination pattern GMAT is now an integral part of CSAT Paper II.
GMAT verifies a candidate's cognitive and decision making skills. From a applicant's perspective GMA, as a subject, does not require any official learning of subject specific rules but an exposure of possible problem types and finding the own way to handle tricky problems, where applicants tend to make mistakes, can help the students get an impeccable score.
The questions check the common sense clubbed with the basic numerical skills that one is exposed to, till class Xth, a competency that will impact on job performance, irrespective of the cadre one selects. GMA can count for the Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills. Problems can be based on logical number/alphabetical/ diagrammatic sequences, coding-decoding, ages, relations, Venn diagrams, sets, dices, direction sense, abstract figures, etc. So the way to gain proficiency at GMAT is to get a wide exposure of all possible question types and have a perfectionist's attitude.
If the applicant gets a single question wrong, then that question is very important for them because it can be the reason of failure in CSAT, as it possibly has something that student must need to learn. But then isn't this the holy strategy for any and all tested areas ?
Basic Numeracy and Data Interpretation (DI): As the sixth topic given in the list of the syllabus prescribed by the UPSC for the CSAT Paper II, it also covers the topics related to numbers and their natural relations, order of magnitude etc.
DI generally covers the problems based on data analysis and its processing. The data can be represented in different forms such as tables, graphs, charts etc. and Data Sufficiency, where one just has to check the sufficiency of data for the question asked. It measures the numerical and counting ability and is accuracy in calculation is the key.
The questions range from purely numeric calculations to problems of arithmetical reasoning, various types of graph and table reading, percentage analysis and quantitative analysis. In this applicants must have more reasoning ability to solve mathematical problems than pure mathematics itself.
