A new human organ has been classified by Ireland scientists, known as the Mesentery. This name is derived from the name of underlying canal and cavity it leads to.

Although there are generally considered to be five organs in the human body, there are in fact now 79, including the mesentery. The heart, brain, liver, lungs and kidneys are the vital organs, but there are another 74 that play a role in keeping us healthy.

It was previously thought to be just a few fragmented structures in the digestive system, but scientists have realized it is in fact one, continuous organ.

Features:

  • A double fold of peritoneum which forms the lining of the abdominal cavity and its function is to keep the intestine attached to the wall of our abdomen, and hold everything in position.
  • The mesentery becomes attached to the colon at the gastrointestinal margin and continues as the several mesenteries of the mesocolon, sometimes collectively called the mesenteric organ.

Functionality:

  • It carries blood and lymphatic fluid between the intestine and the rest of the body. It also maintains the position of the intestine so that it's connected with the abdominal wall without being in direct contact.
  • Its reclassification will help in better understanding about what kind of role does it play in abdominal and digestive diseases which could further lead to less invasive surgeries, fewer complications, faster patient recovery and lower overall costs.

Conclusion: Therationalization of mesenteric and peritoneal fold anatomy permits the surgeon to differentiate both from congenital adhesions. These are highly variable among patients and occur in several locations. The identification of this organ will help the surgeons identify the cause and cure of many diseases further researching anatomical features of this particular organ.
