Since independence poverty is always been a prime concern in India. Jawahar lal Nehru to Manhohan Singh, the head of the government till date expressed their concern to so called rural house hold. Since India is predominantly an agrarian economy, so it has been always attempt by almost every government till date to uplift the rural household. In order to achieve this in an effective manner the Department of Rural Development came into existence as an integral part of Ministry of Food and Agriculture in October 1974. In year 1991 this department got uplift as independent Ministry of Rural development came into existence.
According to 2011 census report around 833 million people habitat rural India. Therefore the most important challenge prevailing in scenario is the need for the gearing up of the income opportunities in farm sector. Non agricultural activity accompanied by the improvements in health, education and skill development need to be implemented effectively to reduce the sole dependency of rural people on the farming. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MANERGA): The prime objective of MGNREGA is to provide enhanced livelihood security to the rural household. In this scheme 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year provided to any household adult members volunteers to unskilled manual work.
Sampoorna Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY): It is an integral programme with sole objective to bring the assisted poor families above the poverty line by organizing them into Self Help Groups (SHGs), training them , their capacity building and provision of income generating assets through bank credit and government subsidy.
Other important components associated with the SGSY are development of infrastructure, establishment of marketing linkages and providing technical support.
Indira Awas Yojana (IAY): In order to meet the shortage of housing in rural India, the government launched this comprehensive scheme. Under this assistance of Rs.45,000 per unit in plain areas, Rs. 48,500 in hilly or difficult areas or IAP districts. For up gradation of Kaccha houses Rs. 15,000 per unit is given.
National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP): NSAP comprises if National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS), Annapurna and Pensions Schemes for vulnerable rural households.
