🇮🇳 Introduction: India's Textile Power Meets Rural Innovation

In 2025–26, India’s Ministry of Textiles is investing in high-value traditional crafts as a key pillar of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. Through schemes like the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP) and the Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS), the government is not only reviving lost art forms—but also unlocking export potential, women entrepreneurship, and MSME growth.

A shining example is the Kheta Embroidery of Kishanganj, Bihar—a vibrant needlecraft now positioned as a sustainable income source for hundreds of rural artisans.

🧵 What is Kheta Embroidery?

Kheta embroidery is a centuries-old textile tradition of Kishanganj, done mainly by rural women. Known for its geometric designs, eco-friendly materials, and cultural motifs, it is now gaining attention as a premium, handmade product fit for global boutique markets.

Also supported is Sujani Embroidery, which repurposes old fabric into elaborate storytelling quilts—an art with deep spiritual and cultural meaning.

💼 Financial Year 2025–26: Schemes Powering Craft & Income

🎯 Government Schemes:

  1. National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP)

  2. Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS)

Key Focus Areas:

  • Skill Training for Artisans (under PM Vishwakarma Yojana themes)

  • Financial Assistance & Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT)

  • Cluster Development for MSME Formation

  • Market Linkage & B2B Opportunities

  • Technology Upgradation and Export Certification

From FY 2020–21 to 2025–26, over:

  • 6 Skill Development Camps conducted in Kishanganj

  • 290+ Artisans Trained

  • ✅ Women given access to financial inclusion tools, banking support, and export-readiness modules

🌍 Global Showcases & Export Linkages

To tap into the high-revenue global handmade goods market, the Ministry of Textiles is showcasing these crafts on major platforms like:

  • BHARAT TEX 2025 (Flagship B2B Export Trade Fair)

  • Gandhi Shilp Bazaar

  • India International Trade Fair

  • Surajkund Mela

  • G20 Artisan Showcases

  • Reverse Buyer-Seller Meets

These events attract international buyers, textile importers, home décor brands, and fashion retail giants, positioning Kheta embroidery as an export-grade, high-margin product.

👩‍💼 Empowering Women, Enabling Financial Freedom

Most Kheta artisans are rural women with no prior business exposure. Under NHDP & CHCDS:

  • They are trained in financial literacy, insurance access, online selling, and branding.

  • They receive tools like Jan Dhan Yojana bank accounts, digital payment onboarding, and raw material subsidies.

  • Many are now part of Producer Companies, enabling collective bargaining, B2B sales, and GST-registered trade.

These efforts align with women-led development goals and bring artisans into the formal economy, making them eligible for MSME loans, insurance, and pension plans.

🗣️ Government's Assurance: High Commitment to Artisan Growth

In a formal response to Parliament, Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, emphasized that these schemes are central to preserving heritage and ensuring that handicraft exports grow sustainably, making artisans part of India’s $100 billion textile export roadmap.

🏁 Conclusion: Threads of Change and Income

The revival of Kheta embroidery is not just about saving a traditional art form—it’s about building sustainable livelihoods, boosting India’s exports, and empowering rural women entrepreneurs in 2025–26. As these artisans get global exposure, financial inclusion, and government backing—they are no longer just craftswomen; they are change-makers shaping India's economic future.
