When we think of the Indian Constitution, we often imagine Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the Constituent Assembly, and the legal brilliance behind it. But do you know who actually wrote it by hand?
It was Prem Behari Narain Raizada, the master calligrapher whose penmanship turned the Constitution into not just a legal document, but a national treasure and a work of art.
Born into a family of calligraphers in Delhi, Prem Behari was steeped in the art of elegant handwriting. A graduate from St. Stephen's College, he chose not a career in law or politics but one in aesthetic legacy. His family’s tradition of calligraphy made him the perfect candidate for the historic task of transcribing the most important document in India's history.
When the Constitution of India was finally drafted and approved, the question arose—who would write the final version by hand? Prem Behari Narain Raizada was approached, and his answer surprised many:
"I will not charge a single penny for it. But I have one condition – my name should appear on every page as the calligrapher."
This simple yet powerful request ensured that his contribution would never be forgotten.
Raizada used a flowing italic style, bringing both grace and gravitas to the 251-page document. Each page was an artistic masterpiece, with every letter reflecting India’s cultural depth.
🖋️ Facts About His Calligraphy Work:
Time Taken: Nearly 6 months
Ink Used: Homemade ink prepared from natural ingredients
Material: Special parchment paper
Style: Flowing italic script (inspired by Western calligraphy with Indian elegance)
Once Raizada completed the writing, artists from Shantiniketan, including Nandalal Bose and Beohar Rammanohar Sinha, decorated each page with stunning indigenous motifs, borders, and artworks. This elevated the Constitution into an object of cultural reverence.
The original handwritten Constitution of India is:
Preserved in a helium-filled case
Displayed at the Parliament of India
Considered one of the most beautifully crafted constitutions in the world
In the era of AI and digital documents, the story of Prem Behari is more inspiring than ever. It reminds us that human craftsmanship, dedication, and heritage still matter.
