
Known as the ‘Cultural Heart' of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Almora is a beautiful hill station 316 km away from Dehradun the capital Himalayan state Uttarakhand.
Situated at the altitude of above 6000 meters, popular pilgrimage sites like Nanda Devi and Jageshwar are situated near Almora. Fairs takes place at these temples attract thousands of devotees from across the world.
Almora also a starting point for many treks like Binsar, Ranikhet, Mornaula, Mukteshwar, etc.
Foundation of Almora was laid in 1568 by Kalyan Chand during the rule of the Chand dynasty. Prior to that that the region was under the control of Katyuri King Bhaichaldeo who donated part of Almora to Sri Chand Tiwari.
Almora is also a known place to catch up on history. Govind Ballabh Pant Museum house of Almora is a rich collection of artifacts used by the Katyuri and the Chand dynasty. Besides the Govind Ballabh Pant Museum and temples, Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is an attractive tourist destination.
Cave paintings dating back to the stone-age period is visible on the outskirts of Almora at Phulaseema (4 km), Pharkanauli and Lakhuudiyar (20 km). People doing daily chores and dancing, animals, reptiles,are the subject of these paintings etc. form the theme of the paintings.
Almora is also an important cantonment town it is the centre of Gorkha Rifles cantonment.

Famous personalities such as Swami Satyanand Saraswati (yoga guru), Govind Ballabh Pant (first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh), Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan (wife of the Pakistan's first Prime Minister) Sir Ronald Ross (Noble laureate), and P C Joshi (first chairman of Communist Party of India) were born in Almora.
Swami Vivekanand and Uma Thuram (American actress) also spent a good part of their life in the beautiful town.
Shopping
Shopping options are not much in the Almora. Garments made of angora wool is the prime attraction here and it can be purchased from Thana Bazaar and Lala Bazaar Chowk Bazaar, Karkhana Bazaar. Copperware found in the markets is also a popular tourist buy.
Where to Stay
An option to stay in Almora is ample from the range from budget hotels to mid-range hotels. Besides that good resorts are also available here, most of the hotels are situated on Mall Road and Link Road.
During September October, hotels rooms tend to get booked in quick successions since tourists throng the town to attend the Nanda Devi fair. It is recommended to make travel plans in advance to feel comfortable here.

Options to eat in Almora are limited Bal Mithai is a popular sweet made of milk, found in Almora. Most of the restaurants are also located on Mall Road. The restaurants generally offer north Indian and Kumaoni foods. Restaurants associated with the hotels are also a better options to eat. Most of them offer multi-cuisines like Indian, Chinese and Continental. A few café's are also located on Mall Road.
Best Time to Visit
Almora can be visited anytime of the year because it has a beautiful canvas. However, during winters Almora tends to be very cold with temperature dropping as low as zero levels. Summers are very pleasant here in Almora. March to November is the best time to visit the hill station.
