New Delhi, Feb 26: A study report by FICCI finds that in the next ten years from now, about 500 million Indians will feet an urgent need of new, urban homes, which is close to the requirement by China, North America and Western Europe in total.
The population count of India is to see 1.7 billion by the end of 2050 and growing urbanization will say nearly 900 million population to Indian cities, the FICCI report titled 'Urban Infrastructure in India' said.
City capacity in India will need to increase nearly four times in less than 50 years. This is the rate of urbanization and urban infrastructure has to contend with in the face of inadequate urban infrastructure to match the demands of the existing urban headcounts.
The study estimated the outlook that there is insurmountable load over the basic infrastructure systems such as water supply, sewerage and drainage and solid waste management in Indian cities.
The study report, prepared by the FICCI's Urban Infrastructure Committee, highlights some of the problem in Indian urban infrastructure, suggests remedies and articulates a blue print of short term measures as well as long term goals for India.
The FICCI report also says that Urban Local Bodies (ULB) and government procurement in relation to Indian urban infrastructure focuses more on construction of the facility rather than on the long term operation and maintenance of the facility to maintain the Indian cities.
Slow working planning systems have manifold implications for creating slums and urban impoverishment in India.
The bulk state ownership of land in urban area can be used to galvanize affordable housing which will create a construction boom in India
The report also stated that the Indian ULBs have an inadequate fiscal and financial base which hampers their ability to provide efficient services to the needy people.
