The press in Bihar has got more than 150 years of History. It has deep root as concerned to the chronology as well as people of the state. Development of press in Bihar had perfect balance of English as well Hindi intelligentsia. Moreover, Urdu has also evolved significantly and matured well with the time on the land of Buddha and Mahavira.

Development of English Press: English reporting in Bihar is more than 100 year old history. The first English news paper “The Bihar Herald” was started by Guru Prasad Sen in year 1875. In 1881, news paper named Indian chronicle was published from Patna. Early 20th century witness the publication of daily named “The Motherland” and “Bihar Standard” other news paper by Nationalist.

Two more English daily named “The Bihari” and “Bihar Times” come into existence during this period. These two daily advocated for the creation of independent Bihar. In 1903, Bihar Times was published from Patna as a weekly. In 1906, it was combined with the daily “Bihar News” published from Bhagalpur and given new name as “The Bihari”. In 1912 it was converted into daily. In 1917 it was replaced by “Searchlight” under the guidance of Shaiyad Haider Hussain.

Searchlight played vital role during Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement. It acted as the chief spokesman for the nationalist ideology and played significant role in mass awakening against the colonial rule.

Maulana Majahrul Haqq , during civil disobedience movement laid the foundation of daily named as “ The Motherland”. In 1924, the first Prime minister of Bihar (As per 1935 act the chief minister was designated as Prime Minister) Mohammad Yunis Started a daily “The Patna Times”. In 1931, Kameshwar Singh, the king of Darbhanga laid the foundation of “The Indian Nation”.

Development of Hindi Press: The development of Hindi press in Bihar was quite slow as compared to that of English. The Hindi newspaper was “Bihar Hindu” started in 1874 from Patna and it got closed in 1925.  Next was “Sarwahitaishi” started in 1980 from Patna. In year 1913, a daily named “ Hindi Bihari” came into existence.

After 1940’s, Bihar witnessed acceleration in the development of Hindi Press. In 1941, Hindi edition of Searchlight got published.

As of now, Janshakti, Aaj, Pabhat Khabar, Dainik Bhashkar, Dainik Jagran, Rastriya Sahara, Sanmarg are leading Hindi daily of Bihar.

Development of Hindi Urdu: The first Urdu daily Published from Ara under the heading of “ Nurul Anwar” and the owner of this daily was Mohammad Hasim.

During the notational struggle Urdu daily played important role in mobilizing the masses. Some of these are Sada-ye- Aam, Etihind, Shakti, Nayi Kiran etc. As of now more than 50 papers are being published in Urdu in Bihar. All the it doesn’t have many readers. The most prominent Urdu daily as of now are Koumitanji and Sangam.
