Diwali the festival of lights is celebrated all over India with grandeur and fervor. People of all generations celebrate it with great enthusiasm. They express their happiness by decoration their houses with rows of lit diyas, bursting crackers and inviting close friends and relatives to their place for a sumptuous food.

It is the time of the year when children voluntarily get up from their bed before the break of dawn to have the customary oil bath. After this they wear their festive clothing and light oil lamps to alight sparklers and crackers.

Diwali In India 2012There is a significance attached to the custom of lighting clay lamps. The beauty of the world cannot be experienced in the dark. Light is a gift of God. By lighting lamps on diwali day people pay obeisance to the almighty for bestowing them with peace of mind, wealth, good health, knowledge and valour.

Darkness according to Hindus represent ignorance, light on the other hand symbolizes knowledge. Therefore by lighting lamps people try to ward off ignorance and all other negative forces.

Diwali in India is celebrated for 5 days:

Dhanteras – The first day holds great significance to the business community. Offices and houses are decorated with rangoli and lamps. The day is considered to be auspicious for purchasing gold and silver.

Narak Chaturdasi – Lord Krishna is supposed to have made the work free of fear by killing demon Narakasur on this day. People especially in the state of Maharashtra follow the traditional practice of taking bath with oil, fragrant powder and gram flour on this day of Diwali. People in North India, especially Punjab worship Lord Ram on this day.

Lakshmi Puja – It is performed in every household after sunset. Devotional songs are sung and sweets are offered to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

Govardhan Puja - Cattles are decorated and worshipped in the villagers by farmers for they are supposed to be their source of income. In temples the deities are bathed in milk and dressed silk attires and ornaments.

Bhai dooj – This day is dedicated to brothers and sisters. Sisters perform arti and apply vermillion on their brothers’ forehead and pray for his good health and happiness.

Diwali in India is celebrated in every Hindu household, even in the state of Kerala where Onam is celebrated as the main festival.

Although our lifestyles have undergone a sea of change, Diwali in India continues to be celebrated with the same zeal as in the past. The traditional clay lamps that are lit at night have now been replaced by colorful electric lamps, dress code has also changed, however the custom of performing puja has been carried down the generation very well.

Diwali gives us the time to pause from our busy schedule and express our gratefulness for all that we have. It gives us the time to enjoy and laugh with friends and family. Diwali continues to be a wonderful festival even today. It is a time of sharing and giving, it is a time when people interact with their near and dear ones, something which we overlook throughout the year. Every year, the festival returns with merriment and excitement.  Diwali in India no wonder is a happy occasion for everyone.
