History Of India's Population Census

India is one of the very few countries in the world, which has proud history of holding census after every ten year. The Population census of India has very long history behind it. The earliest literature ‘Ring Veda’ reveals that some kind of population count was maintained during 800 BC to 600 BC.  Chanayakya , who wrote the Arthsastra around 321 BC laid stress on census taking as a measure of state policy for purpose of Taxation.

During the regime of Mughal King Ja-la-Ud-Din Akbar  the great , the administer report Ain-e-Akbari included comprehensive data pertaining to population , industry , wealth and many others characteristics , In ancient Rome, too, census was  conducted  for purpose of taxation . The history of population census of India can be divided in two parts i.e. Pre-Independence and Post- Independence era.

The Complete Census of the Indian city conducted in 1830 by Henry Walter in Dacca. In this census the statistics of population with sex and broad age groups and also the houses with their amenities were collected.

After 1941, Census India got its independence in 1947. The Bhore Committee constituted for making plans for post war development in the field of health made a comprehensive review of the field of population and recommended that a Registrar Genral of Vital and population Statistics at the centre be appointed and at provincial level, a Superintendent mat be appointed and at provincial level, view to improving the quality of population Statics. The first census was from 9th to 28th , February 1951.

The number of question canvassed during population Enumeration in census of 1951 and 2011 are: 1951 census 14 questions and 2011 census 29 questions.
