Located in beautiful Indian state of Assam in north eastern part of the country,The Kajiranga National Park has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The park is famous for its one horned rhinos and two thirds of the world's rhino are here. Kaziranga National Park is also home to the Indian tigers and is also an important tiger reserve of India.

Background:

The Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was made way back in June 1905 with an area of 232 sq km. In the end of 1908, the park area at Kaziranga was increased by 152 sq km on the banks of notorious Brahmaputra River.

In 1908, Kaziranga Park was officially designated a Reserve Forest by the government. After eight year in 1916, it was converted to a game sanctuary and named as Kaziranga Game Sanctuary. In 1938, hunting was ligally prohibited and visitors were permitted to enter the park.

The government of Assam had passed the Assam (Rhinoceros) Bill in 1954, which imposed heavy penalties for rhinoceros poaching to provide legal protection to the precious animal.

Fourteen years later, in 1968, the Assam government passed 'The Assam National Park Act of 1968', declaring Kaziranga a designated National Park and finally In 1985, Kaziranga was declared a World Heritage Site by the UN body UNESCO and came on global map as well.

Attractions :

Close look at Rhino, Swamp deer etc. on ‘Elephant Safari' every morning. Sighting variety of wildlife by ‘Jeep Safari', thousands of local and migratory birds flocking in wetlands and the scenic beauty of Karbi Anglong Hills.

Must Know:

The park remains closed for the visitors from mid-April to mid-October because of heavy monsoon rains. Visitors must have binoculars and warm clothing along to enjoy the trip here.

Fun Facts:

There is an interpretation centre at the Bagori range of Kaziranga to facilitate the visitors and to seek information about the park.

Hiking is prohibited in the Kaziranga National Park to avoid potential man-animal conflicts. However, observation towers are situated at few places for tourists to enjoy the beauty of the Kaziranga National Park.

It is fun to take the most famous one-hour elephant-back rides in the park, and watch when a team of elephants makes pincer movements, surrounding the rhinos without frightening them off.

Where to Stay:

November to May is the busy tourist season for the park and so the rooms here are generally fully booked during that time. Most of the hotels are located quite close to the National park. Budget rooms are also available only at Rs 1,000 and provide proper comfortable accommodation. Deluxe rooms cost less than Rs 3,000 and offer AC rooms and also coffee shop facility as well.

Suites in luxury hotels and wildlife resorts are available in Kaziranga National Park, ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 6,000. Such hotels offer state of the art facilities like health club, multi-cuisine restaurant, pool, bar, safety vaults and currency exchange. Royal treatment is offered to guests and one can also avail rooms with an aesthetic view of the sanctuary here.
