Today is diwali. I started dreaming again. My friends must be cracking patakhe , ma would be making sweets and my little sister!! must be busy with her rangolis. But where I am? I am in an alien country, with no evidence of diwali, no sweets, no rangoli. Living and working abroad is always exciting news for everyone. Who wouldn’t want to have a better salary, a lavish life style, pollution free air, no social barrier for women regarding dressing and most important status in community.
But an expatriate life also brings difficulties with themselves. As an expat I can understand better.
Health problem, risk of safety, different culture, cuisine, language, missing home and friends are common problems which every expatriate faces.
First few days are full of stress. When you are new at job, don’t know the locality and neighborhood yet. May be you are overwhelmed with these new experience. It will be difficult in the beginning, so don’t stress out and relax.
First you should find where is the bank and ATM, near-by grocery store, doctor and medicine store, an Indian restaurant so you won’t miss your cuisine. Try to figure out the local language, it will make your life much easier, you might learn it easily by watching a television show or movie with subtitles in local language or vice-versa.
Some time the weather in the destination country is totally opposite to your own. It might affect your health, so notice the weather and prepare to protect yourself well in advance from harsh weather. The new place might not be as safe. Few countries have disturbance due to war, some are involve with criminal activities so you should take precautions.
If you are shifting with kids, you will have to find out a good English school for kids. Off course these international school will be costly. But keeping the future of your child in mind you will have to take an expensive decision without wasting time. May be after one year or two he will understand the local teaching language and can be shifted to a local school. In some countries government’s schools are far good than the privet schools unlike our Indian government school.
In some countries there is not a single thing matching to Indian culture. You might-not miss your festival by making an Indian group, doing get-togethers and arranging programs for festivals. You might not enjoy as much as you would do in India, but you won’t feel lonely and left-out.
Besides the difficulties we Indians can adjust anywhere in world. We learn this adjusting nature from our own country. India itself is a subcontinent. If we move from north to south or east to west, the culture, language, festivals everything is different. More than 1000 language, different weather in different parts of India, talking style , living style, all these diversity teach an Indian to adjust everywhere with a smiling face.
