The sea shores lined with coconuts convinced the traders to name the beautiful place as Kerala, a land full of coconuts and known as God’s Own Country across the world. The beauty which can make anyone speechless has been the inspiration for many famous poets. It seems as if green color has been painted across the state.
Its rich cultural heritage has been influenced by three religions, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam because it is the land where these three religions took their birth in India. The magnificently carved sculptures, rich music and varied dance forms has their foundation from these religions. For example, margam kali is folk dance which is performed in large groups only by malayali catholic Christian women. Kathakali and mohiniyattam started out from folk dances but later on became forms of classical dance.
I would like to go more in depth about Kathakali. It originated three hundred years ago and is a good example of perfect blending of ancient Hindu literature, music, expressions, drama, color, extravagance and dance. The makeup used is completely natural and it takes almost six hours to get ready for a performance. The language used is Sanskrit thus only the upper caste Brahmins or in other words, the Namboodiris were allowed to watch it as they were the only people who can understand the language. Now, many forms have been derived from this ancient dance form like Kolkkali, thullal, kakkarishi natakom, chavittu nadakam etc and these dance forms use Malayalam.
